Lifelong Learning is the process of keeping your mind, body and spirit engaged — at any age — by actively pursuing knowledge and experience. Amira Choice Champlin is at the forefront of curating programming that engages, educates, and enlightens residents. Coordinated by Life Enrichment Directors, Lifelong Learning is designed to help residents learn and grow as they enjoy these unique opportunities.
Whether you enjoy history, art, literature, music, or creative movement, you’ll find an opportunity to learn and participate in a variety of activities. Lifelong Learning at Amira Choice Champlin is a collection of coordinated arts and education programs that explore a wide variety of creative endeavors. Whether you are an Independent Living, Assisted Living or Memory Care resident, there are Lifelong Learning activities for everyone!
Collaborating with community partners like Northern Clay, MacPhail Center for Music, Kairos Alive and Curiosity Studio to name a few, Lifelong Learning provides an immersive creative experience for residents. A variety of craft sessions are held once a week, providing residents with the opportunity to explore their creativity and learn new skills in a supportive and engaging environment. From pottery and painting to jewelry making, residents can choose from a wide range of hands-on activities to express themselves and unleash their artistic talents. These sessions not only offer a fun and fulfilling way to spend time but also foster a sense of accomplishment and pride in creating something unique and meaningful. Residents look forward to these weekly craft sessions as a chance to relax, socialize, and tap into their creative side.
Sharing ideas in a safe and supportive environment has awakened the artist in many residents who never had the opportunity to participate in art, writing, or music classes, but nonetheless have discovered hidden talents and a new outlet for pursuing them. We create a space that allows residents to explore creative expression in new and exciting ways, and with many different activities.
Working together to learn and create provides a unique opportunity to make new friends and discover new ideas and interests. From resident art shows and receptions, to having their artwork featured on greeting cards and in the Ebenezer Lifelong Learning calendar, this unique program encourages residents to grow and explore as they celebrate their unique (and sometimes newly discovered) talents.
In the Amira Choice Champlin book club, the residents choose what genre they would like to read, then follow a curriculum to discuss the major themes. However, residents and staff usually find themselves just having fun and openly discussing the book! Music also plays a huge part in our community. One of our residents has a dedicated setup with a monitor and computer, treating us to tunes every morning in the Parlor. His curated playlist, researched daily for the perfect genre and decade, sets the tone for the day. In addition to our in-house DJ, regular live performances are scheduled at our community twice a month, bringing in music that evokes our memories and creates special moments for residents to enjoy.
Additionally, our calendar features "Flex Your Brain" games that offer a mix of fun and challenge, stimulating our minds to think creatively. And don't worry if it gets too tough - hints are always on hand to keep the fun flowing smoothly!
Encouraging residents to share and pass on their creations fosters a sense of community and a bridge to the future. During our reminiscing sessions, residents delve into various topics from the past, such as school memories, automotive adventures, and work experiences. These moments of reflection not only spark engaging conversations but also deepen connections among residents as they learn more about each other's unique life stories.
Research from many organizations, including the NIH National Institute on Aging, shows that with opportunities for self expression and discovery, seniors experience vibrant living, artistic growth as well as improved mental and physical health. Whether it’s through movement, expression, or passive enjoyment, Lifelong Learning helps individuals stay connected to their world — both locally and beyond and it is an essential part of the Amira Choice Champlin experience.
